About a month ago (and almost before anyone in Denmark had acctually touched the iPad) I taught a class in Digital Editorial Design at the Danish School for Media and Journalism. I have been teaching Digital Editorial Design there before and I knew that the interactive design students at DMJX are great at adapting new technologies. Thats why I saw an opportunity for the students (and myself) to play around with the hyped new gadet from Apple.

From what I could see from the demos that some of the big international publishing houses had already released, this gadet would be very well suited for magazine-like content. Therefor I approached the Danish high end food magazine Gastro and asked if they wanted to help supply us with some magazine content and to critique the finished designs in the end. Creative Director Kenneth Schultz took the challenge and it seemed like he didn’t regret spending a hole day of bad coffee in a class room in the outskirts of Copenhagen. Thank you Kenneth!

The assignment
The student had two and a half week to research, conceptualize and design an iPad app/magazine.

  1. First task of the assignment was to research the target audience and to design two Gastro reader personas.
  2. Second task was to think up a concept for Gastro that would appeal to these to personas if they were iPad users
(Considering: Great user experience, relevant in the user context and possible to monitize).
  3. The third and final part was to design and animate the concept.

I selected 4 of the final projects to feature here…

Made by: Marcus Fuchs & Jacob Rosenberg

Great concepts! The first one plus the map function of the last concept would be my favorite.

    Thanks for sharing :)
